He sets my feet upon a rock…

maine cliff

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and he set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.  ~Psalm 40:2 (NASB)

There are seasons in life when we can relate to Joseph who was stripped of his multi-colored cloak, his favored position, and thrown into a pit in the wilderness.  (Genesis 37)  Hungry,  thirsty, and dirty, he was sold into slavery and abandoned by his family. He was wrongly accused, imprisoned and forgotten.   Uncertain of God’s purpose for all that was stacked up against him,  I imagine he would have experienced great darkness, loneliness, and fear.   Joseph’s faith remained strong and his character never changed.  He trusted that God was in control and would provide for his needs.  He knew God would lift him from the pit.

Feeling depleted and dismissed, we may  face pit experiences  in our  church, workplace, marriage, and/or friendships!  These hard times are often the training ground for the work that God is calling us to do next. He is teaching us to trust in Him and equipping us for what lies ahead.   There is a purpose for the  lonely and difficult  waiting, the sitting it out in darkness .  Although everything in our lives may appear confusing, in his perfect timing He will act! The thing about pit experiences, we need someone to lift us up and pull us out!

Our God will lean down to us and lift us from our bondage.  He will set us firmly on a solid foundation, and help us get walking again! He makes our weak ankles strong and he clears our dimmed vision as we look towards Him.

Walk with assurance this day; He will lift you above your troubles!
