He hews out channels through the rocks,
And His eye sees anything precious.
He dams up the streams from flowing,
And what is hidden he brings out to the light.
Job 28: 9-11 (NASB)
I received a fragrant, Orchard-Apple, JEWEL SCENT candle from my daughter for Christmas. I was eager to find the hidden jewel as I burned it each night. Every candle contained one, but only a few were genuine. Imagine my excitement a few weeks later when I discovered a beautiful ring hidden in foil. I thought only the authentic gems were fashioned into rings. I could hardly speak when I called my daughter to tell her I had won a HUGE diamond ring. She laughed and set me straight. Picture my disappointment as she informed me I had to look up it’s code on their website to find its worth. Needless to say, it wasn’t worth much. But it sure looked like the real deal!
Job tells us something similar in Job 28. Most of us spend our life searching for “the things of this world.” We think our financial success and material possessions will bring us happiness. But all of earth’s treasures don’t amount to much. The gold, silver, copper…sapphires, topaz, and many other jewels do not begin to equal the value of God’s wisdom. We are left feeling unfulfilled and disappointed. Wisdom can’t be bought for a price and nothing can be exchanged for it! So where can it be found? And how can we begin to understand God’s way?
We observe God’s power and knowledge, and we are left speechless. Yet, we only glimpse the fringes of what He is able to do! He understands the mystery of the deep and is Master over our fears. Going with us as we climb…cutting through rock, and overturning mountains at their base. He sets the limits for the rain, dams up streams, and piles waters into a heap. God makes a way for us to walk through on dry land…to do what seems impossible! He sees everything under the heavens, and knows what He knows! It is all under His control and we can’t begin to fathom the works of His hands!
God understands wisdom’s way, and knows its place. But to all living things, the search for wisdom is hard! We must turn from the things that tempt us, the glitter and gold, and choose holiness. Bigger homes, faster cars, fancy clothes, and diamond rings still leave us wanting. We always crave more and they are never enough!
God sees each precious child of His and brings all things hidden to light. He wants us to come transparent and broken; He doesn’t expect perfection! And He will heal and make us whole. Our Great Physician makes a way in the darkness and restores our devastated ruins. His wisdom is of far greater value than anything we could long for. So we seek His will and way. And we go forward in trust and obedience.We leave our fears with Him , the Master of the deep!
“And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”
Job 28: 28(NASB)
We have everything we need when we turn from earth’s treasures and leave them at the foot of the cross. We must fear the Lord, and choose holiness! All wisdom and understanding is within our reach…and it is the real deal!
