The House Among the Trees

image

I run…
Down the quiet path
Anticipating
The locust tree-lined way
Sweetness drawing me forth
The shaded coolness
The red bird flies by
Singing his song
And I still by the house
Built in the wooded green

Nobody lives here…but me
And the trees
They keep my secrets
By the stone wall
The weathered barn is my friend
Growing old and gray together
The storms and seasons have aged us
Sitting side by side
Sharing our stories
Hearing the unspoken words
That stay with me
No explanation necessary
Our eyes see
Understanding echoes through the fields
Leading to waters where
Dreams set and sink
And hope to float

I rest in the hollow
Waiting until my heart can empty no more
Courage grows and strength builds
And I stand by the peeling
Determined to go forward
Whispering good-bye
I run and climb
I take my time
Until a new day dawns
And I do it all again…
I return to the house among the trees
Nobody lives here but me
