Oh clap your hands, all peoples;
Shout to God with the voice of joy.
Psalm 47:1 NASB
My grandson’s word for the day was “hoowahhh.” With a mischievous gleam in his eye, he helped me build towers, and then he poked the middle and watched them fall. Pleased with himself, he’d exclaim, “Hoowahhh!”
Later, the small child’s footsteps kept pace with mine as we circled the pond and our routine. He paused often to toss a rock or branch into the clear, shallow water and repeated his exclamation. When the storm hit in the afternoon, I wasn’t surprised that our picnic in the basement seemed normal to him. He was confident and unafraid. However, the next morning I noticed that his typical response to my questions was a whispered “maybe.” He was timid and cautious.
Doubt also creeps in unannounced for God’s older children; it doesn’t take much to render us silent and ineffective. Whether because of insecurities or concerns for what others will think, we hug the back pew and dismiss the dreams God planted in our hearts. Our joy is hushed as despair sets in; and, we miss out on His many blessings. God’s gracious gifts, new found friendships, and opportunities to serve, slip by.
Therefore, never weary of prayer and praise. They change our posture and perspective. Our circumstances. Pray without ceasing until it becomes a pattern, the very rhythm of our existence. When words fail, the very breath we take will do as we turn and acknowledge God’s sufficiency. He knows our need and desires before we bow our head. His assurance will permeate our thoughts and actions as trust merges with our petitions, songs, and gratitude. God’s plans are best. Lean into His love and rest. Be refreshed.
Sorrow may endure for a season, but joy comes with the dawn. Anticipate the morning. Conform to God’s will and He will delight in you. The unrest and confusion won’t last.
Clap your hands and give a shout of joy, a great “hoowahhh!”
Blessings,
Lily Mae
