And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Luke 22:19 (NASB)
The heart of ministry is in the breaking of bread with one another. When we don’t know what to say or do…we make plenty and provide. We express love and concern through a small bag of cookies, loaf of bread, or simple meal. Words are not necessary as our humble gift reminds others that they are being carried through their pain!
When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His disciples and ate the Passover meal. (Luke 22:14,15 paraphrased) He leaned into the ones He loved and broke the bread. When we go through times of suffering, we draw comfort from our community. We are not alone as we grieve together. As the food is passed, our words slowly take shape and are spoken. Our stories are told and our pain is shared.
We remember as we break bread together that His body was broken for us. There was a purpose for His suffering and death on the cross; He made a way for us to come to the Father. In His timing, He will reveal the purpose for our suffering. For now it is enough to know that we have become more sensitive to see the needs of others. We will break the bread and pass it often as we remember Him and what He did for us. We will share our suffering with one another.
Broken, we break bread together…
